Description
Prophetic Figures in Late Second Temple Jewish Palestine: The Evidence from Josephus, by Rebecca Gray. New York/Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1993. Pp. xviii + 238. N.P. Gray, whose work was originally a 1990 Oxford University dissertation under E. P. Sanders, hopes to contribute to a "better understanding of Jewish prophecy around the time of Jesus" by examining "the evidence from Josephus for prophetic figures in Jewish Palestine in the late Second Temple period" (p. 3). Her method: "It will be important throughout this study to consider the literary context of Josephus' reports, both their immediate context and the more general setting provided by the works in which these reports occur" (p. 5). Clarifying Josephus's views, she suggests, will provide a starting point and a framework for future study of early Jewish prophecy in other sources (pp. 6, 167). Gray's thesis seems to be that "looking at things through Josephus' eyes" will challenge modern assumptions, which tend to see biblical prophecy as the paradigm, for his view of prophecy is much broader than ours (pp. 6, 165).
